The South Dakota Quilt Guild was started in 1985. The first officers were Arlene Towler President, Vice President Doris Wheeler, Secetary Mary Welchert, and Treasurer Peral Klages. There were 48 members. In May of 1986, they held a one day quilt show in Miller at the United Methodist Church. Needing a logo, they sponsored a contest which was won by Evelyn Rose.
They held a quilt show in Belle Fourche on Oct. 17-18 1987. New officers were President Doris Wheeler, Vice President Pat Phinney, Treasurer/membership Darlene Quillen, and Secretary Margret Bezpaletz. In 1989 a quilt show at the St. Charles Hotel in Pierre. The theme was “Dolls and Quilt Show. The 1990 the quilt show was postponed until September also held in Pierre. In September of 1993 Pierre once again hosted the quilt show and there were 221 entries. The logo pin was designed and given out also in 1993. In 1994 there were 183 members and in 1995, the guild grew to 203 members. The guild continues to promote education through its classes held twice a year during the Spring and Fall Retreats. A quilt show is held every two years.
South Dakota Quilters Guild members currently meet twice a year. Meetings are held in April and September around the state with workshops, show and tell, block exchanges, trunk shows, demonstrations, good food, chocolate, and fun.
Annual membership is $20, which includes a newsletter with SDQG news, articles from local guilds, a calendar of quilting events, discounted prices for workshops and more.
Our purpose is to encourage a wider appreciation of quilting, to raise and maintain standards of design, individual ideas and expression, and to keep interest in quilting alive. We do this by promoting local quilt projects, programs, charitable work, classes and a biennial quilt show for the public. We'd love to have you join!
